gingerbread house decorating at freshmade nyc

We had a great time last weekend decorating a gingerbread house with Freshmade NYC, a beautiful space in Noho that offers cooking classes for kids, catering and birthday parties. They've partnered with Chloe Doughy (a cookie dough delivery service, amongst other delicious things) for a fantastic lineup of holiday-themed baking classes happening this month. Snowman or confetti cookies, anyone?

I'm all for baking/cooking/snacking with the girls... I don't, however, love cleaning up the mess that accumulates afterwards. Venturing out to do this kind of activity in Freshmade's much nicer and more spacious kitchen than my own was a win-win, and Millie had a ball decorating in class. Viv mostly read books and ate the candy that was supposed to go on the house, and a friend joined to help us decorate and hold the roof together while the "glue" was applied. Such a fun afternoon.

Getting it home in a crowded subway car was another story altogether, but we did in fact make it with house intact! Whew. Just another fun way to spend this holiday season. Thanks, Freshmade NYC!

Disclosure: We were given a free ticket to review this gingerbread house decorating class. All opinions expressed, as always, are my own.

millie's thoroughly modern afternoon

The girls and I travelled alllllll the way downtown last week for an afternoon of arts and crafts celebrating the Kid Made Modern line by Todd Oldham at Target. Such fun! First of all, Target knows how to throw a party. But then, that doesn't surprise you, does it? The event was held at Todd's studio, and the halls were thoroughly decked with yummy food and drinks and enough crafts to keep a child busy for hours. Todd's line encompasses everything from ready-to-go "kits" (which include all the materials you need to make something FAB) to a la carte accessories like double-pointed crayons and fabric paints. Perfect presents for your budding artist!

On that note, the timing could not have been more perfect as Millie has really started to get into drawing and coloring, and instead of lovely line after line after line, she's drawing people now and oh, "Central Park" the other day. It's been so fun watching this side of her develop.

Lastly, I have to add that Mr. Oldham could not have been nicer... as we were leaving, he went running around trying to find a napkin for us as we took a couple peanut butter and jelly snowflake sandwiches for the subway ride home. And Vivian? She managed to sleep for the entire party but woke up 5 minutes before we left, with just enough time to take a picture and pick her nose at the same time (I'll still claim her).

'Tis the season to embrace your inner artiste!

a festive afternoon

Last weekend, the little gals and I ventured out to one of my favorite gems in Central Park, the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre. I just love this quaint building that is filled with so much history (it's been in the park since 1877, people!) and offers such sweet and affordable entertainment for children.

Now through December 30th, you can catch "The Three Bears Holiday Bash" -- the perfect way to kick off the holiday season! Any show that asks for audience participation for "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is okay by me. And with an audience mostly filled with children, there is tons of laughter and silliness to go around. The girls were transfixed nearly the whole time and really enjoyed themselves, and we also liked when the puppeteer came out afterwards and showed how he makes the marionette dance around. Not as easy as it looks!

Tickets ($7 for children and $10 for adults) can be found HERE.

Afterwards, we stopped by Treat House (home of amazing Rice Krispy treats and what is apparently a super cool "tree house" seating area) but alas, that part was closed off. Another day! We then headed to Pinkberry, which was completely empty (note to self: frozen yogurt is a great place to hit in the winter, especially when the kids are along!) -- yummy goodness and fun times ensued:

Hope everyone is having a great holiday season thus far!
